Artist’s Statement

I am a Modernist in attitude, influenced by Jazz and many artists, particularly Kandinsky. I agree with Kandinsky that the circle is the most peaceful shape and that it represents the human soul. In my work I hope to PRESENT (inside to out) rather than REPRESENT (outside to in). I am a representational artist, but choose to represent not the world of appearances, but emotional situations and psychic spaces. My work is characterized not by a single technology, method, process or subject, but rather by a sustained engagement with the fundamental elements of art and the mechanics of viewing.

All of my work takes part in the dynamic experience of the moment: my life experience, the collective experience of the history of art, and the interactive experience of creating the piece. I try to call up in the viewer a special experience of their own: a child-like awe and curiosity, a renewed freshness of vision. - Rich Ankeney

Artist's Bio

I am an artist and photographer from Galesburg, Illinois, with over 50 years of experience in photography and a renewed passion for painting and printmaking.

I hold degrees in painting and photography, art education, and instructional technology. I taught art and photography at Carl Sandburg College for over 25 years. My work has been widely exhibited and celebrated for its innovative approach.

In 2002 I received an Outstanding Alumni Award from the Art Department at Quincy University.
