Last summer, Eastern Iowa teens designed demolition derby cars that competed in a special “Just Crushing” heat at the Dubuque County Fair (photo). The teens were tasked with developing designs based on social issues important to them, and translating them onto life-sized cars. They also built scale models of their cars, which will be on display at the Muscatine Art Center this spring, along with photographs and other visuals that tell the story of their project from start to finish. Led by Allison V. Rowe, Assistant Professor of Art Education at the University of Iowa, Maia Sheppard, Assistant Professor of Social Studies Education at the University of Iowa, and Nancy Nowacek, Associate Professor of Graphic Design at the Stevens Institute of Technology.
